Mandatory high heels at work
Closed

A woman in Japan has petitioned the government to ban companies from enforcing gender-based dress codes in the workplace - specifically the requirement for women to wear high heels. This follows a 2016 case in the UK, in which a receptionist was sent home on her first day for not wearing heels. After that, parliament ruled that "company dress codes must be reasonable and must take equivalent requirements for men and women"

This comes down to social perceptions rather than ability to perform in a job. Do women appear more capable and professional if they wear heels? Do you think such perceptions will ever change? Would you quit a job if you disagreed with the company's dress code?

There should be a formal attire for a work but it is nonsense that you require heels to look formal.

Should be allowed to wear whatever shoes they like that are suitable for work.

Heels are inhuman, I would take the job but I would complain often and loudly.

I wouldn’t take the job if it wasn’t a type of job that requires heels to perform in the role effectively. Do other countries do this too. I don’t think it should be legal anywhere.

It has been proved that high heels cause foot, leg and back problems.

I don't feel that women appear more capable in high heels. I feel we should be able to wear what we like, but I certainly don't make a judgement about someone based on the height of their shoes.
