Is it time that people should be forced to take out some form of insurance if they own some form of property?

Australia does dig deep during disasters, but how can people expect others to come forward, when they do not do anything to protect themselves, such as being adequately insured. It it time that people also make sure that in fire prone areas, that they clean up rubbish ect arround their own homes to make sure that they are not putting thmselves and even others at risk.

I hear what you say, however if home insurance wasn't a wrought maybe many would. Dear friends of ours many moons ago had home insurance all their lives and never once claimed for anything. A fire swept through their newly furbished home and with all the attention to the upgrade forgot to pay their insurance that year. The company did not pay cent due to no payment was received. These places are heartless and money grabbing scabs. Reply

It's a personal thing as to whether to insure or not. However, if someone chooses not to insure then it should not be on the public to pay for rebuilding their homes. If they have a mortgage then as others have said they have to have insurance anyhow. Reply

If you have a mortgage, then it's a requirement but others can do what they like I suppose. I paid off my home years ago, but I still take out insurance! I don't think you can force anyone to though. Reply

Shane I do not feel that you can force anyone to take out insurance on their homes. I know what you are saying but it is up to the individual. Reply

How rude for anyone to think they should have the right to force someone else to buy anything, regardless of what it is. Reply

I completely disagree.
Have you looked at the cost of Insurance in some of these places? The insurance Companies charge up to 25% of the value of the property to get any form of LIMITED COVER and much more if you want cover for what is likely to happen in that area.
So they want to be in a position of covering the cost of the property every 4 years or slightly more and still say we offer Insurance Cover when actually they have priced that cover out of peoples means to pay.
Most people get a loan to buy property and then suggesting that they get another loan every year to pay insurance is nothing but a joke.

No, it should not be made compulsory to insure.
However if people choose not to insure they should not be allowed to run Go-Fund-Me appeals to raise money.
I reported one of these scammers last week.
Photos all over her facebook page of overseas holidays and crying poor me, single mum of 4 , uninsured and lost my house and ScoMo made me shake his hand and walked away from me. Boo Hoo.
They should only get the allocated assistance payments being given by the government under disaster relief that is being provided to all affected people. No more, no less.
It is a gamble they took. Rolled the dice and lost.
Same with under-insurance. Don't whinge when the payout is not what you want because you under insured.
As for cleaning up rubbish.
It is already in council by-laws to keep property bush-fire ready with fire breaks and all grass mown in the summer months.
