Words Can Hurt

This picture is a Japanese illustrator's depiction of a type of "yokai" (supernatural being) called 'shinki' (唇鬼), which is an admonishment to be careful with your words.

As the illustrator writes, “The mouth is the root of calamity. Words, which we cannot see, kill.”

Do you agree?

Linking this to the sad death of Nikki Grahame, I wonder if her anorexic struggles began with a 'harmless' comment about her weight or body shape as a child? Sometimes some thing said when we are a child can reverberate throughout our adult life. When you are a child often you don't have the maturity to just brush it off Reply

I think this takes it a little far but I think the choice of words can have a powerful effect on the receiver. Just look at the debate that occurred on this site over the use of the word 'support' in the post about LGBTQ. Reply

I agree, I have the tendency to say stuff before I've even thought about whether it's appropriate so although I don't say things that are offensive, it sometimes comes out in the wrong way. It is one thing that I'm trying very hard to stop doing. Reply

No, of course not! Words are just words - no physical pain at all! Reply

A tad dramatic Hawks. Words can and do wound but they do not kill. Then again there is the school of thought that believes, as I do that it is not what is said but how we react to it that is important. Reply
