Tokyo Olympics on Toluna #1 - Win 2,000 points
Closed

Traveling to Japan to spectate at the Olympics is not an option, so we thought we'd bring a bit of Japanese culture to Toluna!

Japan is renowned for their cuisine. Whilst sushi and ramen have been exported around the world, there are many foods that can only be found in Japan, or specific regions of the country. Japan is made up of 47 prefectures and each has a specialty dish.

One such example is monjayaki - one of Tokyo's most famous dishes. This is a savory pancake in which various ingredients such as squid, pork and cabbage, are cooked with a batter on an iron plate or grill. Other regions of Japan have their own variation of savory pancakes (commonly known as okonomiyaki), but monjayaki has a slightly different consistency in addition to being cooked and eaten differently - it must be eaten hot off the grill with a small spatula-like utensil (known as a "hera").

If we were in Tokyo for the Olympics, we would definitely be trying one of the many monjayaki restaurants in the city!

What other Japanese dishes do you enjoy, or would like to try? If you could be in Tokyo for the Olympics, what other places would you visit apart from the sporting events? Leave a comment below and we give 2,000 points to 5 of our favourite comments!

I'd go to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, a beautiful place to walk and relax. I'd also go to Gomaya Kuki in Harajuku for their delicious black sesame ice cream.

Like to visit Tokyo's Riyogoku and Kiyosumo neighbourhoods, where I can see the stables of the Sumo wrestlers. Love to understand the lifestyle of Sumo wrestlers and eat " Chanko Nabe" ( sumo stew) like one of them!!!

I'd really want to taste Japanese popular Sushi and Zezeryumon's popular Tempura (Shimbashi). I'd really like to see Tokyo Motorshow especially the (cutting-edge technology). I will absolutely visit Oedo Antique Market to discover the amazing antique and vintage wares. I will undoubtedly travel in bullet trains. In Japan, I'd also love to eat Okonomiyaki and Gyoza. I'm also delighted to be involved in the Japanese tea ceremony. The Tokyo Skytree, Japan's highest tower, will indeed be my destination. I'm also looking forward to taking a relaxing bath on an Onsen.
